Chat Clients

The best way to connect to AsylumNet is with software known as a chat client. The most popular Windows client is mIRC. Some alternatives are PIRCH and XiRCON. Both mIRC and PIRCH are shareware, XiRCON is freeware. Mac users will want to use Ircle which requires paid registration after 30 days. If you are running a flavor of Unix, look into BitchX, ircII or XChat.

Once you have installed the client and set it up (Entered your nickname, real name, e-mail, etc.) you will want to connect to AsylumNet. On mIRC, simply click on one of the AsylumNet servers in the serverlist. On other clients, use the '/server irc.asylumnet.org' command.

Now that you've connected, you need to join one of our channels. You may wish to type '/list' to see all possible channels.

WebTV users have the ability to access a client on the WebTV Home Page. Here's how you use it:

  1. Return to the Home page
  2. Select Community
  3. Select Chat
  4. Select Go to
  5. Enter the following:
    • Server Address: irc.asylumnet.org
    • Port: Use either 6667 or 7000
    • Channel: Try #Asylum or #Cheers
  6. Select Connect

Now that you're on IRC, you'll be hearing a lot of complex terminology. Let's go over a few of these.

Popups
If you right click on someone's name or on a window, a drop down menu will appear. This is called a popup because of the way the menu "pops up"
Remotes
These are things such as autogreets which can do things like automatically say "Hi." when you join a channel.
Aliases
These are usually time saving shortcuts, for example instead of having to type '/join #Asylum,#Beginner,#Quake' you could just do a '/favechans'.
Ops
People with an @ in front of their name are channel operators, or 'ops'. They have been given power to run the channel. They can kick and ban users as well as change channel modes.
IRCop
IRCops, or Opers, help run the network. They are here to help make sure everything's run smoothly without abuse to servers, services, and users. IRCop stands for IRC Operator - It has nothing to do with cops or law enforcement. You can find our IRCops in #Asylum.
Admin
This is short for Administrator. These are the people who own and/or run the servers on AsylumNet.
